How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photoshoot in My Studio: Tips for a Stress-Free Session

Welcoming a newborn into the world is an unforgettable moment, and capturing those first precious memories through a professional photoshoot is the perfect way to preserve them forever. If you’ve booked a newborn session with me at my studio, you're in for a wonderful experience! To ensure the session goes smoothly and we get the most beautiful images, here are some helpful tips to help you prepare.

1. Schedule the Session

Newborn photos are best captured in the first two weeks of life when your baby is still sleepy, flexible, and easy to pose. Ideally, you’ll want to book your session before your baby arrives— this way, we can schedule it as soon as possible after birth. Newborns grow and change quickly, so the earlier we can do the session, the better.

If your baby arrives after your initial booking, don’t worry— I’ll always try to accommodate you and adjust the session time accordingly.

2. Dress Comfortably, but Plan Ahead

For your newborn session, comfort is key— for both you and your baby! I always recommend wearing simple, neutral clothing, as the focus should be on your baby. Many parents choose to wear cozy, light-colored tops or a soft sweater in shades like white, beige, or pastel tones. I do have a client closet available for use.

If you'd like to be in any of the photos, feel free to bring along a comfy outfit to match the soft and relaxed vibe of the session. For dads, a simple button-down shirt or a plain t-shirt works best.

3. Feeding Before the Shoot

It’s a great idea to feed your baby before you come to the studio. A full, content baby is often a sleepy and relaxed baby, making it easier to pose them during the session. If you're breastfeeding, try to nurse right before you leave home, or bring a bottle with you if you're bottle-feeding.

Once you're in the studio, there will be time for feeding breaks as needed. I always prioritize your baby’s comfort and needs, so if your little one requires a little snack or cuddle, we can take breaks throughout the shoot.

4. Keep Baby Warm and Cozy

Newborn photoshoots often require undressing the baby for those adorable close-up shots. The studio is kept warm to ensure your baby stays comfortable and cozy during their session. Feel free to bring a blanket or extra swaddles that make your baby feel secure. Swaddling helps newborns feel more relaxed, and I have a variety of soft, cozy wraps available for the session as well.

If your baby is a little fussy, don’t worry! I have plenty of tricks to soothe your little one, from gentle rocking to using calming white noise.

5. Arrive on Time and Be Patient

Newborn sessions can take a bit longer than other types of shoots, as we focus on capturing those delicate moments and ensure your baby is comfortable throughout. Expect the session to last around 1-2 hours, depending on your baby’s needs. This may seem long, but trust me— those extra moments allow me to capture all the little details: their tiny hands, soft skin, and peaceful expressions.

Arriving on time helps ensure we can start as soon as you arrive and gives us plenty of time to get the perfect shots. That said, don't stress if your baby needs some extra time to settle in. Patience is key during a newborn session, and I’ll work at your baby’s pace.

7. Relax and Enjoy the Moment

Newborn photography sessions are a chance to capture fleeting, precious moments that you’ll treasure forever. It’s easy to feel a little nervous, but I’m here to guide you through every step of the process and make sure everything goes smoothly. Relax, enjoy the experience, and focus on your baby.

These images are not just about posing; they are about preserving the love and connection you share with your little one. Feel free to sit back, relax, and let me capture these beautiful, natural moments.

8. Plan for Siblings (If They’re Joining the Shoot)

If you’re including older siblings in the shoot, make sure they have something to keep them entertained during the session. I can take individual photos of the newborn first and then involve the siblings for some family shots afterward.

I always recommend a quick snack or treat to keep your older kids happy and energized during their time in front of the camera. And don’t worry about them being “perfect” during the shoot— my goal is to capture real, authentic moments, so if they’re giggling, playing, or even being a little shy, it’s all part of the magic.

9. Relax— It’s All About the Little Moments
