Extended family photo sessions are such a meaningful way to capture multiple generations together — grandparents, adult siblings, grandkids, and everyone in between. One of the biggest questions I get when planning these sessions is: “What should everyone wear?”

The good news? Coordinating outfits for a large group doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little planning and a few simple guidelines, your photos can look cohesive, timeless, and beautifully natural.

Start With a Color Palette (Not Matching Outfits)

The key to a polished look is coordination, not matching. Instead of everyone wearing the same color, choose 3–5 complementary tones and build from there.

For fall sessions, some great color combinations include:

  • Cream, tan, rust, and olive
  • Soft neutrals with a pop of navy or denim
  • Warm browns, camel, and soft blush
  • Muted greens with soft whites or oatmeal tones

Once you choose your palette, each family unit can mix those colors in a way that fits their personal style.

Mix Textures, Not Prints

Texture adds depth and interest without overwhelming the image. Think:

  • Knits
  • Linen
  • Denim
  • Corduroy
  • Light layers like vests or cardigans

When it comes to patterns, less is more. One or two subtle patterns in the group works beautifully — the rest should be solids or soft textures to keep the focus on connection.

Dress One Person First, Then Build Around Them

A great trick is to choose one outfit you love — often mom’s — and build everyone else’s outfits around that color palette. This keeps the look intentional and prevents overthinking.

Keep Comfort in Mind (Especially for Kids)

Comfortable kids = happier photos. If little ones are tugging at sleeves or uncomfortable in stiff clothes, it will show. Soft fabrics, layers, and well-fitting outfits go a long way in keeping everyone relaxed.

Shoes Matter More Than You Think

Neutral shoes photograph best and help keep the look cohesive. Think boots, loafers, or neutral sneakers rather than bright athletic shoes or bold logos.
