Sometimes the most memorable family photography sessions come with a little adventure, and this sweet family’s session in Lake County, Illinois was exactly that. We had planned to start at a beautiful spot, but just as we arrived, the skies completely opened up. Out of nowhere, a summer storm rolled in and the downpour made it impossible to stay.
Thankfully, this family was so flexible and up for anything. We packed up, drove literally one town over, and suddenly it was all sunshine! It felt like we had stepped into a completely different day. The oddness of it made us laugh, but honestly, it ended up making the session even more special. That’s one of the reasons I love being a family photographer in Lake County, IL. There are so many nearby parks, beaches, and outdoor locations that give us options when the weather throws a surprise.
With two little ones, a curious one year old and a playful four year old, the energy was joyful and full of life. The kids ran, giggled, snuggled in close with mom and dad, and gave me so many candid, heartwarming moments. I love capturing families at this stage, where the days are busy and sometimes unpredictable (just like the weather), but also filled with pure magic.
Looking back, I’m so grateful for the storm, because it reminded me that sometimes detours lead to the best memories. We found sunshine, connection, and laughter, everything a family session should be.
