There’s something truly special about fall here in Lake County. Every year, we wait for that moment when the air shifts, when the mornings feel a little crisper, and the trees start offering hints of the colors to come. This year, though? It felt like Mother Nature really went all out for us.
The season unfolded slowly and beautifully, like a painting that revealed itself one brushstroke at a time. One week, it was soft yellows. Then suddenly, we were driving through canopies of deep gold, amber, cranberry, and fiery orange. The kind of colors that make you just stop and stare, whether you’re walking through the forest preserves or simply pulling out of your driveway.
As a photographer, I spend a lot of time outdoors chasing light, and fall is always my favorite time to do so. But this year’s light? Unmatched.
Golden hour felt like it was dipped in honey. The sun sat lower, casting this warm, dreamy glow that turned every leaf into a tiny stained-glass window. Sessions took on this quiet magic. Families snuggled a little closer, laughter echoed through the trees, and every moment felt soft and full of meaning.
Even the simple things were beautiful:
- Crunching leaves under your boots on those early morning walks
- The smell of bonfires drifting through neighborhoods
- Warm drinks sipped slowly on back patios
- Kids diving into leaf piles because they just had to
And maybe part of the beauty was the reminder that seasons change. That life moves forward. That we get to experience these fleeting bursts of color and light as a reminder to slow down and savor. Lake County gave us a fall that felt like a gift this year—something gentle, nostalgic, and incredibly gorgeous. I’m already missing it.
But I’m grateful for every moment, every session, every sunset, and every leaf that danced its way to the ground.
Until next year, autumn. 🍂
We’ll be waiting for you.
